Don’t Be a Child Again

The world is crumbling around us. Drought out west and Africa. Burning heat inland, oceans rising due to ice melt to bury islands. Desert over vast areas where we once grew what we eat. City dwellers with a supermarket on every corner do not want to believe that starvation is on the way. They have two days worth of food in the fridge.

People who are beginning to panic in the face of environmental catastrophe are electing tyrants whose words are said to lull them into complacency and surrender. They are becoming children with tough parents again.

Hurricanes due to hot air rising, destroy Puerto Rico, take roofs and plants and trees and water and stock. Insects are killed by our chemical sprays so that birds have nothing to eat and are disappearing. Polar bears are tossed off melting ice bergs to drown. Ocean warming stops water moving from cold beneath to hot on the top which keeps the Gulf Stream moving. If there is no more cold bottom and top hot, the gulf stream may stop moving to keep our land temperate. Will it be fire or ice that wipes us out if we keep living and polluting as we do?

Kids who do not turn away from reality are gathering together and making demands from governing bodies who make promises soon forgotten. Congressional old timers, largely on corporate payrolls, do not think of using a different source of energy.

Trump wants to chop down the trees in the National Tongass in Alaska, the US’s largest forest, to open all of it to digging for oil. Trump has already replaced most of the EPA with people who are forest choppers and oil well diggers so there is no restraint. Trump is all impulse and no planning. He fires anyone who might disagree.

Bolsonaro, the new president of Brazil, is burning down the Amazon, the lungs of the world, opening it up for mining and farming. Does he know the danger of what he is doing. He treats world wide upset and condemnation as western interference. He hints he can be bribed by westerners who so much want the forest left intact.

How about Duterte, president of the Philippines? He uses eliminating drug use as an excuse for large scale murder of the poor. He gets people to turn in to him non-drug users, ordinary farmers to keep their own lives from Duterte’s killing spree. I would say he likes to kill.

Youth is alarmed and straight forward about the danger. The world we are creating is the one they will have to live in. Not so many adults. They say it will not happen to us. They say science will save us and hide their heads in the sand. They regress to childhood state of mind looking for a protective parent.

For our survival, for decency and respect of mother earth. we need to come back to an adult state of mind and find people to band with to decide what we need to do. We need to join hands and stand against the fossil fuel industry. We need to not obey false leaders who take our money for personal profit and put nothing into survival.
