Let Them Eat Cake

Marie-Antoinette, when confronted by the starving French who asked for bread said “let them eat cake.”. She is with us today. The rich are taking more and more of our tax money, promising us cake some day if we just wait long enough.

Our private hospitals, many of them closed to make apartments for the rich, are set up to bring in the bucks. As a result, they do not buy equipment for unexpected disasters like the Corona virus. Masks and ventilators are too few and hospitals are understaffed. Too many virus patients with too few nurses lead to triaging care. Staff has to choose who will be treated and who will not and die from a lack of care. Nurses and doctors get sick as well because of missing protective equipment like having to wear the now infected mask for a week. The Corona virus fills the air and brings them down.

Factory workers are regarded as replaceable and unimportant. In a country run by the super rich, all labor is being dumped into that category. Meat packers are removed from Corona contaminated.factories which then are closed. The disease spreads in the factory because workers lack protective gear. When virus infected pork and beef and chicken processing plants are closed, animals are not slaughtered to be sold and eaten. President Trump saw the coming meat shortage and demanded workers go back to work, still unprotected. He said that those who stay home will not get unemployment. It is a choose your kind of death situation.

Farmers cannot sell produce to people who lack money. The government which claims to be insolvent forces farmers to chop up their vegetables growing in the field and then plow them under. Note that our government never runs out of money for planes and bombs and war. Why doesn’t it pay the farmers for what they grow and distribute it to the hungry folk whose line stretches for miles waiting for a bag of groceries? There is no profit in harvesting crops and feeding the impoverished. Capitalism is not attracted to performing acts of charity.

What of the homeless people living in subway stations? The local government kicks them out and forgets them. Those on the street are treated no better. People in charge of human disaster do not think of using empty hotel rooms. In a time of ever increasing difference between rich and poor, the poor become invisible.

We live in a capitalist society. Making a profit is it’s goal. Our so-called liberals in Congress make speeches about how sad they feel about the homeless, how upset they are about children whose public schools are overcrowded and understaffed. These same officials give huge amounts of our tax money to corporations and to the super rich. They give money to organizations that pay no taxes.

Having recently given trillions to them, our country will be unable to serve the rest of us for generations And still these elected official sell-outs speak to win our hearts. They have an ability to emote. Most congressional people can do this unless they play the opposite role and attack the needy as parasites (a la Mitch McConnell and Trump).

We vote for these people. We are like young children who are too frightened of abandonment and death to think that our parents do not care for us. There are almost no honest people in our governing body. Nancy Pelosi who is 100 million dollars rich, instead of offering Medicare to Covid sufferers, wants to give them Cobra which covers the cost of insurance while they are unemployed, for a fee of course. She rescues an industry which gives the insured little and takes a lot. Metaphorically speaking, Pelosi’s bread is buttered on the same side.

Do you believe that Republicans and Democrats are different? Look at how they vote. People like Bernie Sanders wail about what is being done to the poor and then vote to give tax money to the rich. Sanders is like a clown that distracts the audience from workers sweeping up horse shit at the circus.
Marie-Antoinette said “Let them eat cake.” when the impoverished French demanded bread. We are all waiting for that illusory cake instead of going on strike to demand a living wage, health care and retirement benefits. Let them know that we are hungry for real food in return for a life of real work.
