Where Are the Birds

I had a wonderful and terrible vacation at my log cabin illegally close to a small river (90 years old before rules about building on a wet lands. The good part was a huge amount of weeding thanks to my putting it off. When I would complete a section, all hot and sweaty, I would put on my swim suit and jump into the river. At first it was quite cold brrrrr coming down from the mountains. I breathed deeply and accepted the feeling. Soon it was just right, paddling in the river upstream seeing the bridge and downstream looking at the meandering river shaded by huge trees. That was the good part.

The bad, terrible part was my bird feeder. It hangs between two trees on a line from which dangle a suit holder, a large mixed grain feeder and a square feeder filled with berries, seeds and grains. Usually it takes a few hours for the birds to find it and then the word is out with an endless series of birds large and small. But not this time! No. Not a single bird was seen, day after day. I had read about the missing food for birds, insects but never put that thought into “my feeder,” Yes. We have Monsanto’d away the bugs as well as making it too hot for them.

No bugs to eat. No birds. What about the whole net of living things? We also are part of it. Every day now I meditate and weep. I apologize for the blindness, the focus on robbing Mother Earth and her denizens, all of them for the profit of a few.

What can I do about this? How to get the greedy ones out of power? I know I and all of us have to recognize time. We have a very few years, possibly as few as ten, to get out of fossil fuels, to stop flying and bombing and polluting and killing. We are all in the same ocean on the same shaky raft. Come together.
