I have deep feelings for Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old girl from Sweden. She represents the part of me I need to develop.. It is so easy to turn my eyes and mind away from an emerging disaster by watching a movie, or yakking on the phone.
Greta does not do that. Her interest in climate change began at age 8. When she was 13, she became seriously depressed about climate change. She saw all life being destroyed by the corporate need to extract and pollute and by the willingness of politicians to allow this in order to make a buck. Her parents, opera singer mother and actor father allowed her to remain home doing this painful study. At 15, she emerged to make a difference. Greta would sit one day a week in front of the Swedish Parliament with a sign saying “School Strike for the Climate.” Her selective mutism turned into speech. She said, “I feel as if I am dying if I don’t protest.”
All over the world, young people have taken Greta as their leader and are confronting politicians. On March 15, 2019, 1.4 million students from 112 countries joined her calling for a climate strike. There was a telling interaction of Nancy Pelosi and 12 to 14 year old climate activists, particularly a sister and brother who had a lot to say which really irritated her. Pelosi told them that she had been working on this problem for 30 years and who were they to speak to her about it. She was not happy when confronted by the news broadcast of her egotism and ignorance; what wasn’t mentioned by the corporate owned press, was her sell-out to the corporations. What is her net worth? Do not believe what politicians tell you? See where they money comes from and you will know.
People told Greta she should go to school and do activist things after she is grown, later, later, later. Greta said that we do not have the time. There is no other choice.
Her mental state is labelled high autism, the old name for Asperger’s disorder. That means focusing on what is important. As she puts it, she sees things as black or white. We, who do not have it, need to sweep the distracting garbage out of our mind to put our energy where it is needed. Elect young people without corporate “pockets”. We can meet fellow activists, use music to sing our love for living creatures; what is more beautiful than a Dragon Fly? Send our love to Mother Earth.
